“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”
My love affair with Spain began back in 2012 when I left my university classrooms in the States for a semester studying in Madrid. In those months, I made some of the happiest memories of my university experience, and although I returned home with a year and a half of school left, I made it my goal to return to Spain after finishing my degree. True to my word, I packed up and left just ten days after graduation. I spent July of 2014 walking and eating my way across eight hundred kilometers of northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago before moving to Madrid to begin teaching English in the fall.
It was then that I began feeling less like a tourist and more like a local. Teaching four days a week, I spent the rest of my time discovering Madrid. I wandered through local markets, shared tapas with friends in traditional Spanish bars, and extensively traveled Spain whenever I had the chance.
After two unforgettable years getting to know the Spanish capital, I decided to move to beautiful Barcelona in 2016 and have been in love with the city ever since. It’s here that I feel like I’ve found my perfect home in Spain—not too big, not too small, amazing weather, great local food, and on the Mediterranean Sea. What could be better?
With no plans to leave Spain anytime soon, I created this blog to share my experience and hopefully inspire others thinking about doing something similar to just go for it. Moving abroad was the best decision I ever made, and I’m thankful every day for the opportunities that living in Spain has provided me with.
I hope you enjoy!
